Cellular fatty acid composition as an adjunct to the identification of asporogenous, aerobic gram-positive rods.
Cellular fatty acid (CFA) compositions of 561 asporogenous, aerobic gram-positive rods were analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography as an adjunct to their identification when grown on blood agar at 35 degrees C. The organisms could be divided into two groups. In the first group (branched-chain type), which included coryneform CDC groups A-3, A-4, and A-5; some strains of B-1 and B-3; "Corynebacte...
متن کاملGas-liquid chromatographic analysis of cellular fatty acids for identification of gram-negative anaerobic bacilli.
A commercially available, computer-assisted microbial identification system (MIS) employs gas-liquid chromatographic analysis of cellular fatty acids for bacterial identification. MIS was compared with conventional identification systems. Of 225 gram-negative anaerobes tested, MIS identified 72.4% of the strains to the species level, 88.9% to the appropriate group, and 93.3% to the correct genus.
متن کاملPolyclonal bacteremia due to gram-negative rods.
The frequency of, risk factors for, and outcome of polyclonal gram-negative bacteremia are still unknown. We investigated them in a prospective cohort study of patients for whom a blood culture yielded >/=1 species of gram-negative aerobic rod. For each patient, pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was performed on 4 colonies of each morphologic type. Episodes of bacteremia were considered p...
متن کاملBeta-lactamase in gram-negative rods: the relationship between penicillinase and R plasmids in gram-negative rods.
Concomitant with the extensive use of antibiotics, the number of multiple antibiotic-resistant strains has been increasing. Since resistance is mainly mediated by R plasmids, we undertook to investigate the characteristics of R plasmid-determined beta-lactamase in 6 Gram-negative rods. The beta-lactamase produced by each organism was classified by its substrate: type P which attacks penicillins...
متن کاملCellular fatty acid composition of Francisella tularensis.
Several unusual fatty acids characterized strains of Francisella tularensis. Long-chain (C20-C26) acids and the hydroxy acids 2-hydroxy-decanoate, 3-hydroxy-hexadecanoate, and 3-hydroxy-octadecanoate appeared to be of special diagnostic value.
